GCABC keeps you informed by inviting you back to join us Tuesday, January 28, 2025 for the second part of our 2024-25 school year series: Assessment and Reporting Student Progress in BC Schools: Advocating for your Child Through Informed Conversations with Teachers.
Over the last decade, the Ministry of Education in BC has undertaken a significant change in the BC curriculum to respond to the needs of today’s learners, including how student progress is reported. The changes to delivery of curriculum as well as assessment and reporting are complex and challenging for schools and teachers to implement and even more challenging for parents to understand without informed guidance. Student learning today is more complex than ever. The curriculum continues to give students a strong foundation in reading, writing, and math. But it also teaches students how to think, communicate, solve problems, and use their knowledge in ways that both matter in school and will matter in a rapidly changing future.
Session #2 – This second webinar in the series addresses some of the questions and comments shared by the participants in the first webinar. We continue to build knowledge concerning the changes in curriculum, assessment and reporting so parents can be better prepared to engage in informed conversations with teachers. Parent advocacy is most effective when parents are able to have an informed conversation with their child’s teacher, based in familiarity with the curriculum and access to the educational vocabulary now used to describe the learning experiences their child is experiencing. This is particularly important as families engage with schools in development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Our two presenters are educators with extensive experience in the BC school system and in working with gifted learners. Maureen McDermid has worked across the K-12 system in 4 school districts in British Columbia as an elementary and secondary teacher, a consultant to districts and independent schools, and in support of parent groups and families. She was a District Curriculum Coordinator (Gifted) for the Richmond School District and serves on the Board of Directors of Choice School for Gifted Children.
Catriona Misfeldt is the former Vice Principal of Choice School for Gifted Children; she also taught at the elementary and secondary levels in the Richmond School District, worked as a Teacher Consultant (Adolescent Literacy) and is currently an Executive Function Coach for 2e youth. Both Maureen and Catriona have contributed to the work of the Critical Thinking Consortium (TC2).
